About Fibershed
Sri Lanka

Fibreshed Sri Lanka is a non-profit organization and one of the affiliate communities that operates in the global network. Fibershed Sri Lanka intends to once again support, empower, transform, and grow the local communities that are already existed in good old days and are engaged in local fiber supply chain in Sri Lanka. Necessary in the transition to a circular economy and sustainable future for the Sri Lankan textiles, fashion and material industries that sustain our lifestyle. It mainly focuses on improving, advocating, and promoting local fibers, local dyes, and local labour systems.

In general, Fibershed develops regional fiber systems that build ecosystem and community health. Our work expands opportunities to implement climate benefitting agriculture, rebuild regional manufacturing, and connect end-users to the source of our fiber through education. We transform the economic systems behind the production of material culture to mitigate climate change, improve health, and contribute to racial and economic equity.

It further aims to valorise waste fibers and plastics into valued circular materials and restore the Sri Lankan cotton industry, by implementing and by reviving traditional farming systems and techniques or as we now call it “Regenerative Agriculture”. In this way we create more value chains for a local community and bio-circular economy in the textile, fashion and material industry throughout Sri Lanka.

On one hand, this countless effort will result in a Fiber-Farm system, starting with international collaborations between local farmers/communities/industries and global customers, by jointly executing fiber projects in Sri Lanka. Integrating global needs – more variation in regenerative organic alternatives to the polluting synthetic textile fibers – with the extraordinary Sri Lankan factors – the perfect climatic conditions for the cultivation of natural fibers and the availability of knowledge and labour. This will directly bring the comparative advantage to the international customers and generate a better life for local (as well as farming) communities. In the future we also initiate domestic Fiber-Farm system collaborations.

On the other hand, advancing circular economy initiatives by transforming Sri Lanka’s waste fibers into valuable products will create a zero-waste ecosystem, stimulate economic growth, and generate new business opportunities, fostering sustainability and innovation in local industries. The circular approach reduces landfill waste, conserves resources, and lowers carbon emissions, contributing to a healthier environment. Additionally, it empowers communities through job creation and skill development, enhancing social and economic resilience. Overall, Fibershed Sri Lanka’s efforts in valorizing waste fibers can lead to a more sustainable and prosperous future for Sri Lanka.
